TOFO NFO Your Guide to Tofo

Nhassanana School

“Escolinha Nhassanana” is a kindergarten and takes care of maximum 60 children aged 2 - 6 years („Nhassanana“ means „children“ in the local language Githonga).
In January 2012 our kindergarten has been founded by Positivo Moçambique – our supporting association (www.mozpositivo.com).
We are located 5km from the Tofo beach close to the petrol station on the same side.
The following buildings (built with local material) you find at our campus of approx. 1000m²:
2 classroom (50 m²)
A Dormitory (50 m²)
A kitchen (20 m²)
A dining room (35 m²)
A big shady playground
Our fixed team exists out of one director, four teachers, one cook, one cleaning lady, one driver, nightguards and weltwärts volunteers from Germany who usually join our project for one year.
We always give our best to offer our children a big variety of activities within our program preparing them for a successful start into their life as a future student.
Social situation of the area is that:
Many families live with less than the average Mozambican income of approx. 470 USD/year.
The main job opportunities for the local people are tourism, arts & crafts, selling of fruits and vegetables, fishing, farming.
Specific educational problems of the area are:
Most children only speak the local language „Githonga“ and no Portuguese - which is required for school education.
The children have no pre-school training, like holding a pen correctly, being able to concentrate, basic reading and writing skills, or knowledge of first ten numbers and primary letters
There are no other alternatives in the area which offer age-based, recreational, daily activities for children.
Strategic objectives:
Create awareness regarding the importance of pre-school education in our region.
Improve the educational quality in our region.
Improve the possibility of income generating opportunities for parents or guardians otherwise not available while caring for children at home.
Pedagogical objectives:
Foster a sustainable pre-school educational environment in our kindergarten.
Improve the Portuguese language skills of our children.
Prepare our children for the transition into primary school.
